Ingredients
- All-purpose flour: 2 1/4 cups
- Unsalted butter: 1 cup, softened
- Granulated sugar: 3/4 cup
- Large egg: 1, at room temperature
- Vanilla extract: 2 teaspoons
- Cocoa powder: 1/4 cup, unsweetened
- Baking powder: 1 teaspoon
- Salt: 1/4 teaspoon
- Nutella: 3/4 cup
- Powdered sugar: 1/4 cup, for dusting
Instructions
- Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined and smooth.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the butter mixture to form a soft dough.
- Divide the dough in half and knead the cocoa powder into one portion until evenly colored.
- Wrap both dough portions and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Roll out each dough to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut matching cookie shapes, cutting heart centers from half of them.
- Place cookies on a lined baking sheet and bake at 350°F (180°C) for 10 to 12 minutes until set.
- Transfer cookies to a cooling rack and allow them to cool completely.
- Spread Nutella on the solid cookies, top with the cutout cookies, gently press together, and dust lightly with powdered sugar.
Notes
- Chill the dough well to keep cookie shapes crisp and defined.
- Allow cookies to cool completely before filling to prevent melting.
- Use a piping bag or small spoon for neat Nutella filling.
- Store filled cookies in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
