Description

A cozy, savory German-inspired main dish featuring juicy bratwursts braised in caramelized onions, warm spices, and rich non alcoholic beer for a tender, deeply flavorful result.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 bratwursts (85 to 100 g each)
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced (about 300 g)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (30 ml)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (30 g)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder (3 g)
  • 1 tsp paprika (3 g)
  • 1 tsp salt (6 g)
  • 1 tsp black pepper (2 g)
  • 330 ml non alcoholic beer
  • 1 cup low sodium beef broth (240 ml)
  • 1 to 2 tsp Dijon mustard (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat, then add the bratwursts and sear on all sides until browned.
  2. Remove the bratwursts and add the sliced onions to the same pan. Cook until soft, golden, and fragrant.
  3. Season the onions with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Pour in the non alcoholic beer and beef broth, scraping up browned bits.
  4. Return the bratwursts to the pan, nestling them into the onion mixture. Cover and simmer 20 to 25 minutes until juicy and tender, then uncover to slightly thicken the sauce.

Notes

  • Use a malty non alcoholic beer for deeper flavor.
  • Caramelize the onions longer for a richer, sweeter base.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
