Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9-inch cake pan with parchment paper. Grease the sides.
  2. In a saucepan, brown the butter until golden and nutty. Let cool slightly.
  3. In a bowl, toss diced apples with lemon juice, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, remaining cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  5. In another bowl, mix brown butter, granulated sugar, remaining brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, and milk until smooth.
  6. Combine wet and dry ingredients, then fold in apples gently.
  7. Pour half the batter into the pan, layer with apple mixture, then top with remaining batter.
  8. Prepare the crumble topping by mixing flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and cold cubed butter until crumbly.
  9. Sprinkle crumble over the batter and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  10. Cool for 15 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a rack. Serve warm with ice cream or caramel drizzle.
