Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, these buttermilk fried apples are coated in a cinnamon-sugar crust and bursting with cozy flavor. Perfect for fall cravings or anytime you want a nostalgic treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large fresh apples, peeled, cored, and sliced into ¼-inch rings
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (plus more for coating)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (plus more for coating)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, whisk buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract until combined.
  3. Pour wet ingredients into dry and whisk until smooth. Let the batter rest for 5 minutes.
  4. Dip apple slices into the batter, letting the excess drip off.
  5. Carefully place the battered apple rings into hot oil and fry for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  6. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a wire rack set over a baking sheet.
  7. While still hot, toss each piece in a cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat evenly.
  8. Serve warm with caramel sauce, whipped cream, or yogurt.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for the best texture.
  • Double-dip in batter for an extra crispy coating.
  • Keep fried apples warm in a 200°F oven if making a large batch.
