Description

Crispy wonton wrappers filled with savory sausage, melty cheddar and mozzarella, plus colorful bell peppers for an easy appetizer that is crunchy, cheesy, and perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 24 wonton wrappers
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup red bell pepper, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons green onions, thinly sliced
  • Cooking spray, enough to lightly coat two 12-cup muffin tins

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and lightly coat two 12-cup muffin tins with cooking spray.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook the breakfast sausage until browned and crumbled, about 6 to 8 minutes.
  3. Stir in the red bell pepper and green bell pepper, then cook for 2 more minutes until slightly softened.
  4. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the green onions, 1/2 cup of the sharp cheddar cheese, and 1/2 cup of the mozzarella cheese.
  5. Press 2 wonton wrappers into each muffin cup, staggering the corners to form cup shapes.
  6. Spoon the sausage mixture evenly into each wonton cup.
  7. Top with the remaining sharp cheddar cheese and remaining mozzarella cheese.
  8. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the wonton edges are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbling.
  9. Let the cups rest in the pan for 2 to 3 minutes, then carefully remove and serve warm.

Notes

  • Drain excess grease from the sausage if needed to keep the wonton cups crisp.
  • Freshly shredded cheese melts more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven for the best texture.
  • You can prepare the filling a day ahead and assemble just before baking.
