Description
Soft French toast rolls filled with sweetened cream cheese, cooked until golden, coated in cinnamon sugar, and finished with a vanilla drizzle.
Ingredients
Scale
- 10 slices white sandwich bread, crusts removed
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar, divided
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 to 2 teaspoons water or milk, for icing
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix the softened cream cheese with 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon until smooth.
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, and salt.
- In another bowl, stir together the granulated sugar and remaining 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
- Remove the crusts from the bread and flatten each slice with a rolling pin until thin and flexible.
- Spread a thin layer of the cream cheese mixture over each slice of bread, then roll each slice up snugly.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium-low heat.
- Dip each roll quickly in the egg mixture, turning to coat lightly.
- Place the rolls seam-side down in the skillet and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side, turning gently until all sides are golden brown and lightly crisp. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon butter between batches if needed.
- While still warm, roll the cooked pieces in the cinnamon sugar mixture until evenly coated.
- In a small bowl, stir together the remaining 1/2 cup powdered sugar, remaining 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1 to 2 teaspoons water or milk to make a thick drizzle.
- Drizzle the icing over the warm rolls and serve immediately.
Notes
- Use very soft sandwich bread for the easiest rolling.
- Do not soak the rolls too long in the egg mixture or they may become too soft.
- Cook over medium-low heat so the centers warm through without burning the outside.
- For best texture, serve warm right after icing.
