- 8 slices cheddar or American style cheese
- 4 soft burger buns
- 1 medium onion, finely sliced
- 2 tbsp neutral oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- Optional: lettuce, pickles, tomato slices
Instructions
- Combine the ground beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, then divide into 8 loose balls.
- Heat a lightly oiled heavy skillet over high heat until very hot.
- Place two beef balls on the skillet and smash them firmly with a spatula until thin.
- Cook until crispy around the edges, then top each patty with a slice of cheese.
- Stack two cheesy patties together to form a double layer.
- Toast the burger buns in the same pan until golden.
- Assemble the burgers with patties, onions, and any desired toppings.
