Description

A cozy French classic featuring layers of seasoned ground beef and creamy mashed potatoes, baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g ground beef
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 100ml beef broth
  • 1kg russet potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 50g butter
  • 100ml whole milk, warm
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease your baking dish.
  2. In a skillet, sauté onion in oil until golden, add garlic, then ground beef and cook until browned. Stir in tomato paste and beef broth, simmer until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender. Drain and mash with butter, warm milk, nutmeg, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  4. Spread beef mixture into the baking dish. Top with mashed potatoes and smooth the surface.
  5. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and slightly crisp.
  6. Let rest 5 minutes, garnish with parsley, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use Yukon Gold potatoes for an extra creamy mash.
  • Add grated cheese to the top for a cheesy crust.
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day!
