Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup whole milk, warmed
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons matcha powder, divided
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons whole milk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
- Add the warm milk, melted butter, and eggs, then mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and soft. Cover and let it rise for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon for the filling.
- Roll the dough into a 14 x 18-inch rectangle. Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly on top.
- Roll the dough up tightly from the long side and cut into 12 even rolls.
- Place the rolls in the prepared baking dish, cover, and let them rise for 30 to 40 minutes until puffy.
- Bake for 24 to 28 minutes, until lightly golden and cooked through.
- While the rolls cool for 10 minutes, beat together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons matcha powder, vanilla extract, and 2 tablespoons whole milk until smooth.
- Spread the frosting over the warm rolls and serve.
Notes
- Sift the matcha before mixing it into the frosting for the smoothest texture.
- Do not add too much flour or the rolls may turn out dense.
- For overnight prep, assemble the rolls, refrigerate overnight, then let them sit at room temperature for 45 minutes before baking.
- Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
