Description

Soft, fluffy cinnamon rolls baked until lightly golden and topped with a silky matcha cream cheese frosting. They are cozy, rich, and balanced with warm cinnamon and earthy green tea flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons matcha powder, divided
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
  3. Add the warm milk, melted butter, and eggs, then mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and soft. Cover and let it rise for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon for the filling.
  6. Roll the dough into a 14 x 18-inch rectangle. Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly on top.
  7. Roll the dough up tightly from the long side and cut into 12 even rolls.
  8. Place the rolls in the prepared baking dish, cover, and let them rise for 30 to 40 minutes until puffy.
  9. Bake for 24 to 28 minutes, until lightly golden and cooked through.
  10. While the rolls cool for 10 minutes, beat together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons matcha powder, vanilla extract, and 2 tablespoons whole milk until smooth.
  11. Spread the frosting over the warm rolls and serve.

Notes

  • Sift the matcha before mixing it into the frosting for the smoothest texture.
  • Do not add too much flour or the rolls may turn out dense.
  • For overnight prep, assemble the rolls, refrigerate overnight, then let them sit at room temperature for 45 minutes before baking.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
