Description

A cozy one-pan pasta dinner with rich meat sauce, tender lasagna noodles, creamy ricotta, melted mozzarella, and fresh basil, all finished right on the stovetop.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 cups water
  • 8 ounces lasagna noodles, broken into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Heat a large deep skillet over medium heat. Add the olive oil and cook the onion for 3 to 4 minutes until softened.
  2. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Add the ground beef, Italian seasoning, kosher salt, and black pepper. Cook until the beef is browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  3. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and water. Stir well to combine.
  4. Add the broken lasagna noodles and stir so they are mostly submerged in the sauce.
  5. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 18 to 22 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until the noodles are tender.
  6. Dollop the ricotta over the top, then sprinkle with mozzarella and Parmesan.
  7. Cover again and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Remove from the heat, top with fresh basil, and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Stir the pasta occasionally so it does not stick to the bottom of the skillet.
  • If the sauce thickens too much before the noodles are tender, add a small splash of water.
  • Freshly shredded mozzarella melts more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
